The Importance and Myth of Solah Somvar Vrat The significance of Solah Somvar Vrat, spanning over sixteen Mondays, is rooted in the enchanting tale of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In a samvat year, the divine couple embarked on a journey to Mrityu-lok (the world of mortality). Along the way, they chanced upon a Shiva temple and decided to spend some time there.

In a playful mood, Maa Parvati invited Lord Shiva to join her in a game of Chaupar, an Indian dice game. Unaware that the temple priest was yet to arrive, they began playing. Curious about the outcome, Maa Parvati asked the priest to predict the winner. The priest, not taking her seriously, hastily responded that Lord Shiva would emerge victorious. Surprisingly, it was Maa Parvati who won the game. Frustrated by the incorrect prediction, Maa Parvati grew angry and cursed the priest, who subsequently contracted leprosy.

News of the priest's condition reached the fairies, who descended to Earth to learn more. One fairy advised the priest to observe the 16 Monday fast and offer jaggery to Lord Shiva on the final Monday, distributing the offerings among his family members.

Following the fairy's instructions, the priest gradually regained his health, much to the surprise of Maa Parvati when she revisited the temple with Lord Shiva. Impressed, she too decided to observe the sixteen Monday fasts.

The significance of this vrat lies in the belief that through devoted worship of Lord Shiva, one can overcome life's obstacles, attain good health, and desired wealth. It is also said to bring about mental peace and happiness.

Individuals with a weak Moon in their birth chart may benefit from observing the 16 somvar vrat, as it can yield positive results from the Moon's influence. Additionally, this vrat can be observed for the well-being of one's mother, promoting her good health.

Lord Shiva responded, explaining the concept of karma and the direct relationship between actions and outcomes in the world. Despite Shiva's explanation, Goddess Parvati remained unconvinced and persistently requested the boon for the businessman. Finally, yielding to the goddess's persistence, Lord Shiva granted the businessman the boon of a son, but with the condition that the son would not live beyond sixteen years.

Despite the joy of receiving the boon, the businessman's happiness was marred by the knowledge of his son's limited lifespan. Undeterred, he continued his Monday rituals faithfully. In due course, a beautiful boy was born in his household, bringing immense joy. However, the businessman remained preoccupied with the impending short life of his son.

When the boy turned twelve, the businessman sent him to Varanasi to study with his uncle. On their journey, they would perform rituals and offer hospitality to Brahmins whenever they rested. After completing his education, the boy returned to the town with his uncle, where he caught the eye of the king who was hosting a grand wedding for his daughter.

The king, troubled by his daughter's prospective groom's physical disability, saw an opportunity in the educated boy. He decided to marry the prince to his daughter, providing wealth and sending them away after the ceremony. The businessman's son, on the other hand, left a message on the princess's veil, revealing his plan to go to Varanasi for further studies and leaving her with another suitable match.

Upon discovering the truth, the king realized the worthiness of the boy and accepted the situation. Meanwhile, the businessman and his wife eagerly awaited the return of their son. They had pledged to renounce their lives if they received news of his death. To their delight, when they learned of their son's return, their happiness knew no bounds.

In gratitude for his son's extended life, the businessman continued his Monday rituals with even more devotion. Lord Shiva, pleased with his unwavering faith, appeared in the businessman's dream, assuring him that the prolonged life of his son was a result of his dedicated worship.

The story concludes with the businessman, now content, recognizing the fulfillment of all his desires through the observance of Monday rituals and the grace of Lord Shiva.
